What do you make?

Adapted from a poem by Taylor Mali
and shared by Pathlight School

What Teachers Make
The dinner guests were sitting around the table discussing life.

One man, a CEO, decided to explain the problem with education.
He argued: "What's a kid going to learn from someone who decided his best option in life was to become a teacher?"

He reminded the other dinner guests that it's true what they say about teachers:
"Those who can...do.
Those who can't ... teach."

To corroborate, he said to another guest: "You're a teacher, Susan," he said.
"Be honest. What do you make?"

Susan, who had a reputation of honesty and frankness, replied,
"You want to know what I make?"

I make kids work harder than they ever thought they could.

I can make a C+ feel like a Congressional Medal of Honor and an A- feel like a slap in the face if the student did not do his or her very best."

"I can make kids sit through 40 minutes of class time when their parents can't make them sit for 5 minutes without an I-pod or movie rental."

"I can make parents tremble in fear when I call home"

"You want to know what I make?"

"I make kids wonder."

"I make them question."

"I make them criticize."

"I make them apologize and mean it."

"I make them write."

"I make them read, read, read."

"I make them spell definitely beautiful, definitely beautiful, and definitely beautiful over and over and over again, until they will never misspell either one of those words again."

"I make them show all their work in math and hide it all on their final drafts in English."

"I make my classroom a place where all my students feel safe."

"I make them understand that if they use the gifts they were given, work hard and follow their hearts, they can succeed in life."

"Then, when people try to judge me by what I make, with me knowing money isn't everything, I can hold my head up high and pay no attention because they are ignorant."

"You want to know what I make?"

"I make a difference."

"And you? What do you make?"

Power of 1 hour lunch break

I used to think that 1 hour is not enough for lunch at Central Business District area as the eating places are always so crowded. Looking for a seat and queueing for food would take up most of the time. Let alone do any other activities.

But, I seen many professionals doing several stuff during the 1 hour lunch break.

For one, they do not like to eat at nearby food stores. They like to go for the yummy food even if it would mean more walking is needed. (they can walk real fast though)

Then, after reaching the location, they would need to find a table for them and their colleagues. It seems challenging to even find a seat for one, let alone a group of people. Here's a test to your analysis skills, haha. You have to quickly scan through the crowd and be prepared to move in to the best possible table at your fastest speed before anyone overtakes you.

Then, here comes the question, who should buy the food first? Time is precious, it's only an hour break, so everyone has to go get their food at the same time.

Taadaa~ the power of a tissue pack. LOL

I never thought it was really happening so commonly until I get to see it for myself. If you happen to see one small tissue pack on the central of the table, that whole table is reserved. Amazing isn't it? I wonder who started this type of seat reservation method.

While having their lunch, they still need to do some networking. You can see them chatting and eating at the same time. Yet, they can finish their food faster than you. Hmm..

Okie, everyone is done with their food. Time for some shopping and settlement of miscellaneous stuff. You can get some clothes, there are always some sales going on. But, you might not have the time to queue and try it on. So, another skill, try it on the spot. haha.

1 hour may seem short, but if you are determined, a lot of things can be done in such a short time.

Lion + Tiger = Liger?

In the wild, a Liger would never have (or super rarely) appeared! It is not the natural way of life.

But, under the (cruel/ creative) act of human, a male lion and a female tiger mate and give birth to a Liger. Not one, it happened to many around the world. There are also Tigon which is the offspring of male tiger and female lion. Unfortunately, due to the special genetics it has, Ligers and Tigons do not seem to have a long life. Mostly was born with defects and died young.

"A liger looks like a giant lion with muted stripes but like their tiger ancestors, ligers like swimming. This goes against the nature of a lion but is what makes creature special. It gets the best of both parents."

Liger

I was totally surprised when I saw this from the Channel U documentary show - Approaching Science.

An eye-opener indeed.

What is human doing?

Many said it's part of the ways to understand human genetics. Is that true?

Another selfish act of human or foolish act of human?

Miracles

"Chun Xue" translate to English --> "Spring Snow"

Isn't it a miracle to have Snow during Spring time??

Aren't you glad tt you have just known a miracle? haha..

I have asked my mum before why this name, she couldn't really give me an answer. So, I figured out one myself. I was born in Lunar time Dec 28, which is in winter time where there is snow. And, two days later, it will be the Chinese New Year, that's why you will see lots of "Chun" appear on all sorts of place. Combining the two, and that's ME!

A lot of peeps commented that my name is very poetic, i agree too. Such a nice name I have. haha.. =P (though a lot of times, people find it hard to pronounce my name.)

I am now a student and a part-time trainer aka teacher. Two total opposites it may seem.
In life, you may not be a "student" or a "teacher" now. But, no matter what you are doing, it is either you are learning something from someone or teaching someone something without knowing it. Even if it's a mistake, you could still learn something from it.

Learning is a life long journey.

It never crossed my mind to start blogging until I learn the value of blogging from aL. I guess my friends will all be very shocked!haha
